“Focus on one thing and do it to the best of your ability. That way you build a following. “
– Etienne le Riche

Etienne le Riche studied oenology/ viticulture and economics (a B.Sc Agric degree) at the University of Stellenbosch. However, to become a great winemaker, one needs in-depth knowledge of the subject. Consequently, he furthered his studies, graduating with a Master's degree in viticulture (M.Sc).

After working for the wine research institute in Stellenbosch, he embarked on an impressive career at the Rustenberg Wine Estate, where he worked for 20 years, establishing an acknowledged reputation for the production of superior Cabernet Sauvignon.

Etienne travelled extensively to gain experience and knowledge, visiting France, Germany, Spain, California, Washington, Oregon, New Zealand and Australia. In 1990 he was awarded the national Winemaker of the Year
John Platter Award. In the meantime, he distinguished himself in the marketing field, following many courses and attending seminars. He has been a member of the technical committee of the Wine and Spirit Board and chairman of the Cape Winemakers Guild.

In 1996 he left Rustenberg and has been making his own wine in a tastefully restored wine cellar on the farm Leef-op-Hoop (literally Living on Hope) in the Jonkershoek Valley, Stellenbosch. The first wine, Le Riche Cabernet Reserve 1997, was an immediate success, earning various accolades. These wines have an enthusiastic local support base and are also widely exported.

The focus rests on being a family-run business with both children, Yvonne and Christo, currently gaining experience in diverse aspects of the wine trade, both locally and internationally.
